Unlocking the Power of Community Geothermal
In the heart of Miami, where the sun blazes and the humidity clings like a second skin, a quiet revolution is underway. Amidst the vibrant neighborhoods and bustling streets, a team of dedicated local experts is working tirelessly to empower the community with a innovative solution: community geothermal heating and cooling.
“It’s like tapping into the Earth’s own air conditioning system,” explains Sarah Alvarez, a project manager with the Miami-Dade Office of Sustainability. “By harnessing the stable, year-round temperatures just a few feet below the surface, we can create highly efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly heating and cooling systems for entire neighborhoods.”
Addressing Energy Inequity in the Sunshine State
For years, Miami’s residents have grappled with the challenges of energy inequity. “Low-income families, especially in our underserved communities, have been hit the hardest by rising utility bills and the burden of fossil fuel-powered cooling,” says Alvarez. “Geothermal offers a pathway to energy independence and cost savings that can truly transform lives.”
That’s where the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Community Geothermal Heating and Cooling Design and Deployment initiative comes into play. With a $13 million funding opportunity announced in July 2022, the DOE is empowering local coalitions to design and install community-scale geothermal systems that can meet the heating and cooling needs of entire neighborhoods.

Assembling the Dream Team
When the funding opportunity was announced, the Miami-Dade Office of Sustainability knew they had to be part of the solution. They quickly assembled a diverse coalition of local partners, including:
- City of Miami: Providing critical infrastructure support and community engagement.
- Miami-Dade College: Lending their expertise in renewable energy and workforce development.
- Neighborhood Associations: Representing the diverse voices and needs of Miami’s communities.
- Local Utility Company: Ensuring seamless integration with the existing energy grid.
- Geothermal Experts: Tapping into the latest technologies and best practices.
“It’s been a true collaborative effort,” says Alvarez. “By bringing together this dream team of local stakeholders, we’re able to tailor our geothermal solutions to the unique needs and challenges of Miami’s neighborhoods.”
Geothermal 101: Tapping into the Earth’s Natural Thermostat
But how exactly does community geothermal work? The concept is surprisingly simple, yet elegantly effective.
“The Earth’s surface acts like a giant, natural thermostat,” explains Dr. Lina Hernandez, a professor of renewable energy at Miami-Dade College. “Just a few feet below the ground, the temperature remains relatively stable throughout the year, typically between 50-70°F. We can harness this constant temperature to efficiently heat and cool our buildings.”
Here’s how it works:

Geothermal Heat Pumps: These systems use electricity to transfer heat from the ground (or water) into a building, providing highly efficient heating. In the summer, they work in reverse, transferring heat from the building back into the ground, providing cooling.

Closed-Loop Systems: A network of pipes filled with a circulating fluid is buried underground or submerged in a body of water. As the fluid moves through the loops, it absorbs or releases heat, transferring it to the building’s heating and cooling system.

District-Scale Implementation: By connecting multiple buildings to a single, shared geothermal system, communities can achieve greater economies of scale and enhanced efficiency. This community-based approach is the key focus of the DOE’s initiative.
“The beauty of geothermal is that it’s a renewable, sustainable, and emissions-free source of heating and cooling,” says Hernandez. “Once the system is installed, it can provide reliable, low-cost energy for decades to come.”
Piloting the Future in Miami’s Diverse Neighborhoods
With the DOE’s funding and the support of their local coalition, the Miami-Dade Office of Sustainability is now spearheading several pilot projects across the city’s diverse neighborhoods.
“We’re starting with a focus on underserved and low-income communities,” Alvarez explains. “These are the areas that have been hit the hardest by rising energy costs and the impacts of climate change. By bringing geothermal to these neighborhoods first, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of the people who need it most.”
One such pilot is taking shape in the vibrant community of Liberty City, where a coalition led by the Miami-Dade Housing Authority is working to install a community-scale geothermal system to serve a cluster of affordable housing units.
“This is a game-changer for our residents,” says Tanya Martinez, the housing authority’s director of sustainability. “Imagine families no longer having to choose between keeping the lights on or putting food on the table. Geothermal gives them the power to take control of their energy costs and free up resources for other essential needs.”
Empowering the Next Generation of Energy Leaders
But the impact of these geothermal projects extends far beyond just the individual homeowners and tenants. The coalition is also investing in workforce development, training local residents to become the next generation of geothermal experts.
“We’re partnering with Miami-Dade College to create specialized training programs in geothermal system design, installation, and maintenance,” says Alvarez. “This ensures that the benefits of this technology stay rooted in the community, empowering local residents with valuable, in-demand skills.”
Across town, in the historic neighborhood of Overtown, another pilot project is underway. This time, the focus is on integrating geothermal with solar power to create a truly sustainable, resilient energy system.
“We’re always looking for ways to maximize the impact of our investments,” explains Alvarez. “By pairing geothermal with solar, we can provide our community with reliable, clean energy that doesn’t just keep the lights on, but also reduces their carbon footprint and energy bills.”

As the Miami-Dade team continues to roll out their geothermal initiatives across the city, the excitement and enthusiasm within the community are palpable.
“This is more than just a technological solution,” says Alvarez. “It’s about empowering our neighborhoods, creating economic opportunities, and building a more sustainable, equitable future for everyone in Miami.”
And with the support of the DOE’s funding and the dedicated efforts of their local coalition, the future is looking increasingly electrifying for Miami’s communities.
